Dr. Hand received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Columbia University and a PhD in immunology from the Division of Immunology of New York University School of Medicine, where she worked under Victor Nussenzweig, MD, PhD, completing her doctoral degree researching malaria.

Shortly after, she received her MD from New York University School of Medicine and completed her internship in general surgery at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Hand also worked as a staff investigator at the Picower Institute of Medical Research, focusing on the development of new therapies for the treatment of inflammatory conditions and HIV infection.

Dr. Hand has been the inventor or co-inventor on 5 U.S. patents and patent applications and their foreign counterparts, and is the author or co-author of many scientific publications.
